Spanish style homes are a familiar sight in warm, coastal regions of the Southwest. They offer a rustic yet elegant look reminiscent of the early Colonial dwellings built by the first Spanish settlers. The floor plan is an upside down plan so the upper living areas would have maximum views of the ocean between the adjacent houses and trees. The front entry foyer is placed halfway between the two floors for easy access and spaciaous circulation between the floors and without a long stair case from the front private courtyard. Lot Characteristics
Colonists from Spain first brought their architectural style with them across the ocean when they began to emigrate to the U.S. in search of wealth. Catholic missions of the time also helped to create modern Spanish style homes. Although we are primarily known for designing and working with modern style homes, we do have a strong love of California Spanish Style architecture. This is probably because of the strong simple passive designed building elements that inspire us to incorporate those elements in our modern home designs. They range in style but still have common architectural features that make them stand out against other homes in the area. Their charm adds a romantic appeal that blends Mediterranean, Moorish and Spanish Colonial elements into a single stunning house plan. Spanish House Plans
Mission revival designs are often more ornamental than other Spanish style homes. They typically feature trimming and carved accents, often made of terracotta, to match the roof. These houses may also feature extensive stone or masonwork, especially outside. This was a complete remodel of a 450 SF nonconforming beach home on a site that had many challenging zoning restrictions. The owners had a very tight budget so the home was designed around many items the owners salvaged from the Habitat for Humanity ReStores such as windows, doors, fireplaces, bathroom fixtures and such. Going with a flat roof enabled the rooms to have higher ceilings and roof lines that gave the little house some presence among the 2 story apartment buildings that surrounded it.
For the book, I obtained written permission from a wide variety of local historic landmarks to infuse photography of them into the book to create context. Above, I proposed new Santa Barbara sandstone walls, drought tolerant plantings, and the architectural jewelry that will bring more charm to the streetscape. I am an admirer of his artistic eye and how he incorporated many of these authentic Spanish materials and architectural details. I also eventually helped them develop a landscape design for the U-shaped entry courtyard, and the immediate areas adjacent to the motorcourt. The home is nestled amongst a variety of old Spanish estates, so the homeowners and I wanted to create something that would blend in nicely with the neighborhood. While some houses leave the stucco bare for a rustic look, many homes have facades painted in light, neutral colors.
