Mission revival designs are often more ornamental than other Spanish style homes. They typically feature trimming and carved accents, often made of terracotta, to match the roof. This was a complete remodel of a 450 SF nonconforming beach home on a site that had many challenging zoning restrictions. The owners had a very tight budget so the home was designed around many items the owners salvaged from the Habitat for Humanity ReStores such as windows, doors, fireplaces, bathroom fixtures and such. Going with a flat roof enabled the rooms to have higher ceilings and roof lines that gave the little house some presence among the 2 story apartment buildings that surrounded it.
The unique master shower has an exterior door where a walkway leads to a private outdoor shower. The home plan has three additional bedrooms with en-suite baths and walk-in closets. A butler’s pantry, powder bath, study, large utility room, three-car garage and several storage areas complete the wonderful amenities of this home plan. The colonial revival home itself is also often designed to be both fashionable and functional. Often, designs feature spiral columns, heavy, carved doors, and trimmed tiles, which aren’t often seen in other Spanish style homes. Spanish-style architecture has been a touchstone of the Southern California landscape since the early 1900s—and it’s still the design de rigueur for builders today.

Mediterranean homes, on the other hand, tend to have straight, clean lines and rely on symmetry. They don’t feature the same curved walls and turrets that grace the facades of many Spanish style homes.
